realistic goal-setting, resolutions and getting things done

go to the gym, eat healthier, drink more water, get enough sleep - sound familiar?

Hours into the New Year, I've been thinking a lot about what I want my resolutions and 2020 goals to be and what goals are actually attainable and realistic. Between my family and my full-time job, I don't have a lot of free 'me' time during the week, which I've come to realize is precious. How do I typically spend this 'me' time? It ranges from cleaning the kitchen after my hubs and son go to bed, scrolling Insta on my phone, answering work emails I couldn't get to during the day or, if I'm feeling ambitious, doing a workout or actually reading. In a book. On my own.

Since having my son, it's taken me some time to adjust to not being able to do everything I want or need to on my schedule - it's now mostly around his. Which, don't get me wrong, is the way it should be, but I still have things that I need to do or like to do.

setting your intentions

Maybe goals or resolutions are the wrong words - let's try intentions. I intend to get more sleep. I intend to drink more water. I intend to get more exercise. Sounds a little less cliche that a resolution...

focus on 2-3 tasks/goals that you feel are attainable in a given time frame

Lists have become invaluable for me. I have two lists at work - one is the longer-term list of everything on my plate (thank you Google Tasks) and the other is the 2-3 tasks I need to accomplish that day or that week. If I complete those 2-3, I focus on a couple more from the longer list. This in turn makes the longer list not seem so daunting. My big personal list - see below.

write them down

Is there such a thing as post-pregnancy brain? Since having my little man, it seems I don't remember things as well as I used to - I'm not talking about memories. I mean more about the every day stuff - conversations, requests, appointments, meetings, etc. This may be because I am now focusing my energy on not one person, but two people (aside from my husband who is pretty self-sufficient :) So, I write a lot down. A lot. I range from using post-its to a planner (Anthropologie has some great ones) to a legal pad, you name it. If you're not into paper lists, Google Tasks is great, or even just the simple Notes and Stickies apps on iOS. I know there are a ton of apps out there for this very reason, but I like to keep it simple.

cross them off

What's not to love about crossing something off your list? It means you completed your task/goal and it's also super liberating. So go you!

My 2020 goals/resolutions/intentions

OK, if I'm putting them here, they have to be official right? In no particular order:

  • aim for 8 hours of sleep a night (I'm useless with less than that)

  • drink at least 4-5 glasses of water each day (I know it's supposed to be more, but baby steps...)

  • do something active every day (can be as simple as going for a walk, doing 15 minutes of stretching or yoga or more strenuous - I play volleyball once a week, so there's that...)

  • eating around the holidays is tough - time to get back on track and cut out some sugar

  • read a book a month

  • send a card or email to a friend or relative once a month

  • travel internationally (working on this one already - more to follow)

  • practice an act of self-care at least once a week (I'll follow with ideas for self-care in a future post)

  • this is a biggie - pay off bad debt (I'm talking things like credit cards - there's a big different between bad debt and good debt - mortgage, student loans, etc.)

  • practice more random acts of kindness

  • don't sweat the small stuff - learn to let go of the bad vibes and focus on the positive

What are you hoping to achieve in 2020?
