acknowledging there is work to do

Putting the COVID-19 chaos aside for a minute, we need to reflect on the events of the last few weeks: the senseless murder of a black man at the hands of a white policeman that was caught on film and the protests around the world that have followed. I touched briefly on this on my Insta, but didn't feel it was right to post another blog post without acknowledging here. Regardless of political or religious views, the horrific killing of George Floyd was wrong to it's very core. Make no mistake, racism is an issue I care about and I want to do better - as a privileged white woman and a mom raising a white male. You'll see in my Insta post some of the things I'm doing to educate myself and my little guy. I also started watching Emmanual Acho's Instagram tv series, 'Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man', which has been powerful to say the least and helpful for me when unpacking and processing these recent events.

I know there may/will come a time when I will struggle to explain to my son why some people hate others based on the color of their skin, or their nationality, or their religious beliefs or their sexual orientation. Because really, how could a child possibly understand that and why do people hate? But in the meantime, I will continue to learn, teach and role model for him to the best of my ability so that he understands love and acceptance and tolerance of people from all backgrounds and walks of life.
